My name is Charlene Brown and I have over 25 years of teaching experience. I have earned my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and my Master's degree in Educational Leadership/Curriculum and Instruction from Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana.I was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and was raised in Brooklyn, New York and Los Angeles, California. I currently have two children (Sydney and Brice). Sydney just graduated from Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida in December 2021 and Brice is a senior at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire.I enjoy reading, listening to music, watching movies, going to plays and traveling. My favorite movie is Sound of Music and I love to travel to Jamaica, Hawaii, Mexico and Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Some of my favorite books are written by Allen Say, Tom Clancy and Sidney Sheldon. I enjoy listening to Oldies, Classical, Gospel, Jazz and Country music. I love my diversity because it helps me to relate to others culturally.Being a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. inspired me to do endless community projects and volunteer work. I volunteer at the food bank every other Saturday at my church at Vegas View Church of God in Christ where we are able to feed hundreds of families with great products from Three Square and Amazon. I am also the proud captain of Steppers for Change where we walk 3.5 miles in the MS Walk Fundraiser to raise money and put an end to people being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. The MS Walk always takes place in April every year. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a walk since April, 2018. Hopefully there will be one this year.My Teaching PhilosophyI believe that children learn best when they are part of the learning community and understand what, why and how the lessons being taught are beneficial to them in the future. By getting to know each child and their family, I am more equipped to meet their needs and better assist them by teaching strategies that best work for them as learners.I also believe that every educator enters the profession to make a contribution. You have to find what your contribution will be. My hope is that you develop the desire and determination to complete the education program at UNLV so that we have more black teachers entering CCSD to meet the needs of all students. It takes a village to raise a child." - Quoted by: African Proverb

This is my 30th year in education. I have taught at all levels from 1st grade to 11th grade Algebra II. I started off as a 1st Grade Teacher. Then I taught 4th grade. I stayed at the middle school and high school level for 19 years and then decided to return to elementary. 2nd Grade is my "sweet spot" because I am able to PUSH all of my students, especially African Americans/Caribbeans students into the Gifted and Talented Program. I teach them as if they were in 6th grade so everyone is challenged to their fullest potential. "No one is left behind under my watch." True Fact.

We NEED Black Teachers in CCSD. I was the only Black Teacher at Cartwright Elementary last year. Thank God for Mr. Peterson in Pre-K. :)
